A Brilliantly Simple 15-minute Exercise for Career Planning

This is for those considering a role, job or career change.

Maybe you’re thinking of becoming a professional fisherman but worried about your net income?

Or perhaps you want to retrain as a barber but you’re not sure if you can cut it?

Possibly you see yourself in a job inspecting mirrors next?

Bad jokes aside, change in your work is a scary thing.

You want a change but you have responsibilities such as a mortgage, a family, and a cat who only eats sushi grade tuna (or is that just me?)

And you’re not really sure where to start in planning your next move.

So here is a brilliantly simple exercise to help with career planning to kick start the journey into your next role:

20 things I like to do

Make a list of 20 things you like to do.

For each activity consider the following questions:

1.) How long since I last did this?

2.) Does it cost money or is it free?

3.) Is this something I do alone or with someone?

4.) Is it mind or body related?

5.) Is it job related?

Try your best to get to 20, and once you have it all written out, consider which of these can be incorporated into your life more and into your next role. You will be happier if you follow it. (It's also a great exercise for retirement planning too)

Consider working with a career coach to explore the list and help you clarify your professional goals. A coach will be your accountability partner, supporter, motivator and be by your side every step of the way until you have made that next move successfully.

Life is short. Work is a huge part of your life. You deserve to have an interesting, fulfilling and happy career.
